What happened to Blue Exorcist Season 1?

I own the first 10 volumes of this story and was very surprised when the anime did jump back in time by the end of the season.
I’m very confused. Whether you have read the manga or not, you should also be confused.

Doing my best to catch up to the current anime season by reading the manga first, then the old anime seasons.
Ao no Exorcist (Blue Exorcist)
Just started the anime from the beginning. I've been reading the manga, I want to catch up to the newer anime seasons.
I had forgotten how good the first episodes are. Good animation, great world building... Also the main character is voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto

Blue Exorcist - Volume 6
Picking this up after a while, and not many thoughts.
There was way too much politics in this one. Many new characters to keep track and complicated backstories, with a double-crossing and family drama.
On to the next!
@silver_huskey I have been picking up the manga (around volume currently)
I did not know the anime had original content not from the manga. Kind of disappointed. I hoped it would be loyal. I remember watching it years ago and enjoy it.
Blue Exorcist - Volume 5
I’m loving these volumes, they are thicker than other stories and full of extra drawings in the back and in between chapters. There’s so much love put into each volume.
Blue Exorcist - Volume 4
Very good volume, we've got action non stop. The plot moved quickly, new characters. The drawing is still intense and funny.
Is the classic training arc coming up?
A new season of #AoNoExorcist is out but I won't watch that until I've catched up with the manga 
I just started the manga this year, I bought volume 5 and it's on my shelf to be read

@Shadow_KID01 Happy to report I went to a public library this afternoon to check out the first volume of #BlueExorcist
Very good! I vaguely remember the anime and I'm glad to see the
#manga is equally intense. Such nice panels just from the 1st and 2nd chapters.
I shall start collecting it, and see how far we go 
@Shadow_KID01 How are you liking the series? What would be a good comparison manga? Or a good similar one.
I was considering collecting the manga but read some reviews that turned me away.
