chikorita157 🐰:unverified:
Maybe I should write my thoughts about about this eventually, but it’s heartbreaking given that it’s his works that got me interested in Anime as a child.

It brings up to Miyazaki’s distain to AI in one of the segments that aired almost a decade ago about AI being used displaying a zombie-like figure learning how to walk. While it’s hurtful given that the video generated with AI itself is hurtful against people with disabilities.

As quoted:
“Thinking of him, I can’t watch this stuff and find [it] interesting,” Miyazaki says after seeing the demo, saying it reminds him of a friend with a disability. “Whoever creates this stuff has no idea what pain is whatsoever. I am utterly disgusted. If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it. I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all. I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.”

https://youtu.be/ngZ0K3lWKRc

Why I’m bring up that clip. OpenAI apparently released a new model that allows you to take an image and make it into the art style of Studio Ghibli along with other styles with their new image generation functions. It’s really an insult to the studio who made these works as the ones generated, are just generic and AI slop with no originality compared to the original

It does bring into question of copyright since people are using content without permission for training these models. Under current law, AI generated content cannot be copyrighted if there is no human element (https://www.copyright.gov/ai/ai_policy_guidance.pdf). I think something needs to change to protect artists and writers.

#studioghibli #openai #chatgpt

Eugen Rochko
You can hardly find a studio the works of which are so thoughtful, kind, and intentional as Studio Ghibli. To stripmine that for its aesthetics, to take a piece of cardboard and paint it like food and say "See, doesn't this taste just as good?" is more than missing the point, it's barbaric, dystopian. It's an insult to life itself. #OpenAI

ResearchBuzz: Firehose
Mashable: OpenAI’s Studio Ghibli-inspired AI art provokes backlash across the internet. “In the livestream demo of the native image generation in ChatGPT and Sora, OpenAI took a selfie and asked the new generator to turn it into an anime frame. The result looked a lot like art from a Studio Ghibli film. It went viral, despite some social media users pointing out the potential copyright […]

https://rbfirehose.com/2025/03/28/mashable-openais-studio-ghibli-inspired-ai-art-provokes-backlash-across-the-internet/
