Madness

For the past twenty-five years, anyone in this country who didn’t consider themselves “acceptable” has been turned into a shadow. If you don't belong to the crowd that obeys without thinking or questioning, you were either ignored, silenced, or ridiculed.

But sometimes, a young person stands in front of a street statue at midnight. They ask questions to a silent face. As they pull their coat tighter around their shoulders, they challenge the world with their eyes. In that moment, the legacy of Don Quixote comes alive: in a world suffocated by harsh truths, holding onto dreams becomes the most human act.

This is exactly what I witnessed when I took this photo. A young person, right in the middle of a system that imposes its version of reality, created a moment of defiance against a silent symbol. Perhaps they weren’t even aware of what they were doing, but they reflected a spirit of youth that dares to oppose. Youth that finds itself face to face with a power that, like a statue, does not see, does not hear, and does not acknowledge them.

In today’s Turkey, becoming Don Quixote is not the hard part. The hard part is telling the truth to those who think talking to statues is madness.
