“Het Mahatma Gandhi Plantsoen” (“Mahatma Gandhi Garden”), near the entrance of “ARTIS ZOO”, features some nice sculptures by African artist Papa Adama. These include a female figure and two dinosaurs made from welded aluminum, installed around 2008.

Created by local residents, the garden is an educational space inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy. Alongside Adama’s work, it includes a few artworks by other artists.

Adama’s art gives the garden a special feel and shows its focus on culture and learning.

“Oase GVB” is a well-known Amsterdam graffiti artist. “GVB” refers to his former graffiti crew. His work appears in different spots in the city, like “De Jordaan”, where a piece called “They Call Me Zombie” appeared.

This particular artwork is located in the Spinhuissteeg in the city’s center.

The bronze statue of Major Alida Bosshardt stands, or better yet… sits, on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal, in front of the “Salvation Army” building. Made by artist Peter de Leeuwe in 2013 as a tribute to her years of service to the vulnerable.

Born on June 8, 1913, in Utrecht, and passing on June 25, 2007, in Amsterdam, Bosshardt was a key “Salvation Army” figure. During WWII, she helped Jewish children and later supported sex workers and the homeless in the Red Light District.

Her efforts earned national recognition, including the title ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ from “Yad Vashem” in 2004.

The “Wiegbrug” (bridge no. 173) is a movable bridge over the Kostverlorenvaart. It links De Clercqstraat with Admiraal de Ruijterweg. The name refers to the type of bridge built here in 1904: a rolling bascule bridge.

In 2004, artist Leonie Mijnlieff added a piece of art to the bridgekeeper’s house. Called “Boegbeeld”, the artwork marks the entrance to ‘De Baarsjes’ and refers to nearby streets, named after Dutch naval heroes. Historic ships once had decorative figureheads. Unlike those, this one doesn’t set sail. ️
